Opens Nov. 12 with U.S. debut of “Art Through Experience” series

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 6, 2021—Today, The Leonardo announced a new state-of-the-art immersive digital exploratory art (IDEA) Space. Located on the second floor of the museum, this 10,000-square-foot, modern technological space is patterned after galleries already captivating audiences in New York City, Tokyo, and Berlin—and the first and only one of its kind in Utah.

Panoramic projections in this digitally rendered gallery will immerse each visitor in imagery and sound, creating a unique learning environment for a range of changing experiences–from visualizing scientific and health data to local performances and storytellers to multimedia exhibitions.

The Leonardo’s IDEA Gallery will provide immersive STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) experiences for Utah students and families. Components of the gallery will be integrated into on-site field trip curriculum, as well as the museum’s traveling educational program—Leo on Wheels—which extends learning opportunities to students across the state.

The IDEA Space’s open, no-touch, dynamic configuration provides a safe exploration space for visitors, and also gives local community groups, performers and businesses the ability to create and host custom experiences of their own.

“Over the last year-and-a-half, The Leonardo team has shown tremendous ingenuity and resilience, finding new ways to deliver our mission of inspiring creativity and innovation,” said Alexandra Hesse, executive director of The Leonardo. “Through this experience, we have had the opportunity to forge new partnerships, spark new ideas, and discover new ways of providing value to our visitors. The nature of the new IDEA Gallery will allow us to showcase both global and local talent and ideas, providing our visitors with a window to the world, and close-up experiences with their own community.”

Art Through Experience Series

The IDEA Space will open with a series of shows titled Art Through Experience. Hosted in partnership with MagicSpace Entertainment and Universal Exhibition Group (UEG), the first event, Monet to Kandinsky, is an exciting, immersive show featuring the works of 10 remarkable masters of modernism that lived during the industrial revolution. Featured artists include Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Paul Gaugin, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Juan Gris, Robert Delaunay, Edvard Munch, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. This international event has played to global audiences in cities including Berlin, Dubai, Moscow, and Bangkok. The Leonardo is hosting the first-ever showing of the series in the United States.

Tickets for Art Through Experience: Monet to Kandinsky are on sale beginning the week of October 5. To purchase and for more information, visit https://theleonardo.org/exhibits/current-exhibits/art-through-experience
