Summer Camps

The Leonardo Summer Camps are designed for curious youth who love hands-on exploration and discovery. We aim to stretch the imagination and help inspire interactions with the world in new and exciting ways. Like everything we do at our museum, our program tries to encompass Leonardo da Vinci’s passion for many disciplines, so each camp includes activities and workshops covering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) topics.

Our education team has years of formal and informal teaching experience and is inspired by the joy of making STEAM concepts accessible to all students.

Camp Policies and FAQs

Deadline

Registration must be completed at least 2 weeks before the start of a camp. The payment and “Liability and Release Form” must be submitted by then for your camper’s registration to be considered complete.

Cancellation and Refunds

If you need to cancel your registration for a camp, you may receive a full refund if done 30 days in advance, a 50% refund between 30 days and 2 weeks in advance, and no refund after the 2-week advance. You may transfer the registration to another child or week up until 2 weeks in advance. Refunds cannot be issued if you take your camper out of camp in the event of another camper’s illness. Please contact the Education Department for questions and extenuating circumstances.

Do you offer scholarships for campers to cover the cost?

We do, depending on funding. You may inquire about this possibility for your child at camps@theleonardo.org.

What grades can attend summer camps?

Children going into grades 1st-6th are invited to attend our summer camps. Camps are split into groups by grade so campers are with peers of similar knowledge and development.

Can I register my child for the alternate age group?

If you have concerns about which group your child will be in, please contact us at camps@theleonardo.org. Our camps are divided to ensure the best possible academic and social environment, but we want to accommodate your child’s needs the best we can.

Location and Procedure

Drop-off and pick-up will be at the entrance on 500 S. It will take place outside at the Summer Camp Cart (depending on the weather, this will be done inside at the same location). Only adults authorized on the “Liability and Release Form” will be allowed to pick up a child. Government-issued photo identification must be presented each time pick-up occurs. A child will not be released otherwise.

Extended Care

You may request to drop off your child early for $20/day or pick up your child late for $20/day ($40/day for both). Early Care Drop-off is between 8:30-9:00 AM. Late Care Pick-up is between 4:00-4:30 PM. Please sign up for this during initial registration or at least 24 hours in advance.

We will not open the doors to any early drop-offs without advance notice and Early Care payment. If you are late for pick-up, you will be charged the base Late Care fee plus $20 every 10 minutes after 4:00 PM (or 4:30 PM with prepaid Late Care) until pick-up occurs.

Can I bring my child late or pick them up early?

Yes, but we require advance notice of this. Our camps are filled with fun activities so we encourage everyone to be on time and remain with us throughout the day in order to ensure the best possible experience.

What does my child need to wear to camp?

Your child should dress to be active and possibly get messy. Please have them wear the appropriate clothes and closed-toed shoes that will allow for that. Face masks are optional. We have extra masks on hand for any campers who may want one.

What is my child required to bring to camp?

Please send the following with your child to camp every day:

  • Backpack or large closable bag
  • Lunch and snacks in a lunch bag or box.
    • Don’t send any food that needs heating or refrigeration. Don’t send anything containing nuts.
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Any items they may need in case of incident or medical reasons (spare clothes, medication, small sensory toy).

We ask that electronics like tablets, video games, and other valuables are left at home. Cell phones are allowed, but must be put away during the camp day. Camp staff is not responsible for items lost during the day.

Behavior Expectations

We have a few basic rules at camp:

  • Respect peers and staff in both words and actions
  • Respect others’ property
  • Follow health and safety protocols
  • Have fun!

Our goal is to help all campers be successful and have fun at our summer camps. We have procedures in place to help make that happen and resolve most issues, but we reserve the right to suspend a registrant’s attendance at camp if poor behavior is unresolvable.

What cleaning and safety protocols are in place due to COVID-19?

We are committed to keeping our camps safe and sanitary. All staff members are required daily to check for ill symptoms and follow a consistent cleaning schedule for areas and supplies utilized in camp. Each camper is given their own space for their belongings. The Leonardo facility is well-ventilated with regularly replaced filters across three floors.

Are masks required?

We follow the Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City COVID-19 restrictions. When they are required by the city and county, they will be required at camp. Currently, masks are not required. We will let campers and parents know in advance if requirements change.

What if my child becomes ill?

If your child becomes ill right before or during camp, please notify The Leonardo camp staff as soon as possible. Especially if your child attended camp right before exhibiting contagious symptoms, we wish to notify families of the other campers in that case. Campers should stay home if they have any of the following symptoms:

  • Any COVID-19 symptoms (fever, sore throat, cough, sinus congestion or runny nose)
  • Elevated temperature
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Undiagnosed rash
  • Sore or discharging eyes or ears, profuse nasal discharge
  • Sore throat or cough
  • Diagnosed contagious diseases such as strep throat or chicken pox
