November 19, 2008
Wednesday
05:00 PM - 07:30 PM
Inside and Outside the Female Body: A Screening and Discussion of "Thin"
Thin is a documentary film that explores the complex issues of body images and eating disorders in young women by photographer and journalist Lauren Greenfield. It is an unflinching and unforgettable look at the devastating and frustrating disease of anorexia which takes the life of 10% of those given the diagnosis. Perhaps, the most troubling issue for the viewer is the recognition that while these young women are dangerously and seriously ill, they, nevertheless, look like the models and actresses who are most admired and emulated in our culture. After viewing the film, presenter Therese Jones will lead an informal discussion of the many issues it brings to light. Therese Jones is a PhD Associate Professor in the Division of Medical Ethics and Humanities of the University of Utah School of Medicine in this event — free and open to the public. Presented with the SLC Film Center.

November 22, 2008
Saturday
01:30 PM - 02:30 PM
Film Series: "Fat Chance"
When single mom and filmmaker Yuka Sekiguchi (Senso Daughters, When Mrs. Hegarty Comes to Japan), overweight at nearly 200 pounds and fast approaching fifty, determines to lose weight in hopes of becoming healthier and happier, she decides to film her struggle, figuring that public humiliation will be a strong incentive to succeed. Fat Chance, by turns serious and humorous, chronicles her six-month effort, involving experiments with fad diets, machines that claim to break down body fat, exercise programs, diet shakes, and consultations with an obesity expert, a psychiatrist, and a plastic surgeon. Discovering the emotional roots of her overeating, Yuka comes to term with some deeply personal issues and, in the process, learns not just about her body, but also finds herself. This film is sponsored in part by Alliance Health and presented with the SLC Film Center.

November 22, 2008
Saturday
03:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Film Series: "Aftermath of Meth"
In 2001, a Mexican drug ring based in Ogden targeted Wyoming's Wind River Indian Reservation with more than 100 pounds of meth -- enough for 45,000 doses. Three members of the ring rented houses near the reservation and formed romantic relationships with young Indian women to gain access to the tribes. Within five years, assaults tripled, thefts doubled and child abuse increased 85 percent. The documentary exposes the ripple effects of meth abuse, including sick and neglected children, environmental damage, thinly-stretched police departments and overburdened health-care facilities. It culminates with the story of a 17-year-old girl who dropped out of school to raise her younger brother because her parents were addicted to the drug. Director Kathy Weiler will talk about substance abuse issues in Utah following the screening. Sponsored in part by Intermountain Healthcare LDS Hospital and presented with the SLC Film Center.

Film Series: "A Story of Healing"
Interplast is the first international humanitarian organization to provide free reconstructive surgery in developing countries, primarily to children with cleft lip and palate and burn scar contractures. Since 1969 the group has treated more than 64,000 children worldwide. Over time, Interplast began organizing surgical volunteer trips to other parts of Latin America, and eventually to Asia and Africa as well. As medical infrastructures improved throughout the developing world, Interplast shifted its focus towards educating and empowering doctors in developing countries by providing surgical outreach directors with the resources (money, education, supplies, etc) to offer high-quality care in their own communities. In 2007, A Story of Healing became the first Academy Award-winning film to be released under a Creative Commons license. Following the film, a discussion will be held with the Utah doctors who have served on Interplast missions. Sponsored in part by MediConnect, Mike Levinthal and Heidi Huntsman and presented with the SLC Film Center.
